The day

Nature, landscapes and culture

  1. 01

9:30 am — Departure from Dar Marhaba

We leave the riad by 4 × 4 to explore the different landscapes and ecosystems around Merzouga’s dunes.

  2. 02

    Merzouga’s lake, Dayet Srij

Our first stop is devoted to the birds that visit the lake, particularly when it holds water. With a little luck, we may see flamingos and other migratory or desert birds.

  3. 03

    The desert and oases

We venture beyond the dunes to discover how birds and other animals live in this environment. Small oases and patches of vegetation offer different opportunities to observe wildlife.

  4. 04

Fossils, the memory of the Sahara

A stop in an area known for fossils reveals another story of the desert: the geology of this part of the Sahara.

  5. 05

    A pause for tea

We choose a quiet place to rest and share traditional tea before continuing our journey.

  6. 06

    Khamlia and Gnawa music

We visit Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa culture. It is a chance to hear traditional music and learn a little more about life in desert communities.

  7. 07

    A traditional lunch

We take time for lunch, perhaps sharing a Berber pizza, before continuing the journey.

  8. 08

An afternoon to watch and wonder

We continue around Merzouga, stopping to watch birds and enjoy the landscapes. We return to the riad in the afternoon after a day of nature and encounters.
